I decided to go with a system which incorporated both wind and solar, so that in daylight the solar panels will be used to charge some large batteries, and these would be augmented by the wind turbine under reasonably windy conditions. So from a weather point of view, the optimum situation would be that every day be bright and breezy !

Here is a diagram of the system I have installed. The system has been sold by a company called Surfacepower, who are located in Mayo. They sell various sizes and types of renewable energy systems, but the installation of the system is left to you.

Here's how it works:

1) The power is generated by the turbine and solar panels.

2) These feed into the charge controller, acting as the brains of the system to accept the wind and solar input and regulate the output power.

3) The feed from the controller supplies a charge to the 12V batteries, and prevents overcharging when the batteries are full.

4) The batteries then feed the inverter, which converts the 12V output from the batteries into the 220-240VAC. This can then be used to power appliances etc. The size and number of the batteries determine the overall storage capacity. Each battery in the picture above is about 3 times the size of a car battery!
